9282006_21648_1.jpg How to install a wireless router at home for use with your iLEARN laptop (courtesy of Jason Schaad, SD23)

15042007_90637_2.pngFirst, you need to buy a router, if you don't already have one.  Although any wireless "G" broadband router will work, I recommend you purchace a Linksys router.  They are available from the usual places (Future Shop, London Drugs, Walmart).
This helps document uses screen shots from my personal home router which is a Linksys wireless G broadband router, model number WRT54GS; it is pictured below.  The screenshots on your model may vary slightly.

Once your router is working, following the 3 easy steps below (4 if you want even more security) to enable secure wireless connectivity between your router and laptop.
Steps

Step 1:  Changing the Router’s Password
When accessing the router’s web-based setup page, a log-in screen will appear asking for the router’s password. The router’s default password is “admin.” You should change the password for security purposes.
The router’s password should be changed to:
Prevent unwanted users from accessing the router’s web-based setup page.
Enable Remote Management.

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page.
Step 2:
When the router’s web-based setup page appears, click the Administration tab.
Step 3:
Enter the new password on the Password and Re-enter to confirm fields.

Step 4:

Step 2:  Changing your Router’s SSID
Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page, type http://192.168.1.1
Step 2:
When the router’s web-based setup page appears, click the Wireless tab.

Step 3:
Look for Wireless Network Name (SSID) and if it’s still set to ‘linksys’ change it to something unique then click Save Settings.

Step 4:

Step 3:  Setting-Up the Wireless Router to Use WPA

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a Wi-Fi standard that was designed to improve the security features of WEP. WPA is stronger than WEP encryption. PSK and PSK2, types of WPA, give you a choice of two encryption methods, TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol), which incorporates Message Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers, and AES (Advanced Encryption System), which utilizes a symmetric 128-Bit block data encryption.
Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page.
Step 2:
When the router’s web-based, setup page appears, click Wireless and select Wireless Security.
Step 3:
Select WPA Personal under the Security Mode drop-down menu.

Step 4:
Select TKIP on WPA Algorithms.
Step 5:
Enter your desired WPA Key on the WPA Shared Key field such as “MySecretKey.” This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network.
NOTE: Do not give this key to anyone. This key will secure your wireless network. Leave Group Key Renewal to 3600 seconds.
